A rare opportunity to engage with celebrated artist Thom Roberts in a one-of-a-kind creative experience, culminating in a public art installation as part of the North Sydney Festival on 2 November.
This event, a partnership between Studio A and North Sydney Council, offers participants a chance to inspire Thom’s new artwork for the North Sydney CBD while experiencing his unique artistic process firsthand.
The event begins with coffee and cake at Studio A, where participants will tour Thom Roberts' studio and learn about his artistic journey. Following this, those who choose to opt-in will join Thom for a one-stop Metro ride from Crows Nest to Victoria Cross station. During this part of the event, participants will gain an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Thom's creative process and his unique engagement with trains and stations.
Thom’s passion for trains and his ability to see the world through this lens – where he identifies as both the Country Link Express train and the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai – will allow participants to view public transport in a new light and gain an insight into the process behind his artwork to be unveiled at North Sydney Festival.
North Sydney Festival is set to transform the CBD into a vibrant, bustling celebration of music, art, and community on Saturday 2 November, from 11am to 5pm. Multiple streets in the CBD will be closed and transformed into lively hubs of entertainment and fun. The festival will feature live music, roving entertainment, market stalls, and Thom Roberts' much-anticipated art installation.
Thom Roberts, a Studio A artist, works across various media, including painting, drawing, installation, animation, and performance. Thom is a four-time Archibald Finalist, whose fascination with trains and transport systems deeply influences his work, as seen in his exhibitions at The National at Carriageworks and the Science Museum in Melbourne.
Studio A addresses barriers faced by artists with intellectual disability, providing them with opportunities and resources to develop their creative talents. By offering professional development pathways and a supportive environment, Studio A helps these artists gain recognition and succeed in the art world.
