The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability App takes public engagement to the next level with the introduction of a cutting-edge augmented reality app, the first of its kind in Australia, adding an exciting layer to the way in which visitors can interact with the site.
Our app uses advanced technology to provide an exciting interactive experience by creating digital encounters with animated animals, historical re-enactments and bringing sustainability concepts to life. Using a smartphone or tablet, visitors scan the QR codes located across the award-winning site to enjoy three different trails including history, native animals and sustainability.

Historical information
Information about the First Nations history of this site was researched and written by Karen Smith, Education Officer the Aboriginal Heritage Office. Karen has been the AHO’s Education Officer since 2011 and has shared her knowledge and experience of the local area and Aboriginal history and culture with thousands of local residents, students and schools. She leads guided walks and provides talks and presentations regularly at the Coal Loader. Karen is from the Buruberongal clan of the Hawkesbury (Derrubin) area. Her family has been living in the Manly area for many years. Karen was awarded the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship for her work and commitment in the protection and education of Aboriginal culture and heritage. We thank her for her expert assistance in this project.
Special thanks to Council Historian Ian Hoskins who contributed his time and experts to the project. To learn more about the history of the Coal Loader and the North Sydney area, see the team at North Sydney Heritage Centre.
