There are a number of ways to get involved with our Heritage Centre, including becoming a volunteer museum attendant or digital volunteer from home, and transcribing oral history recordings.

Museum attendant

The Heritage Centre manages two historic house museums, the Don Bank Museum and Sexton's Cottage.

Volunteering at our museums involves meeting and interacting with the public and becoming familiar with the history of the sites and the general area. Museum volunteers usually do one 3-hour shift a month. Some people choose to share shifts with another volunteer, but usually staffing the museum is done by a single person. Full training and mentoring are provided. Contact us for more information.

Digital volunteering off-site

Do you want to volunteer from home? Do you have a computer and an interest in local history? Join us and volunteer online with flexible hours. Our Voices from the North Shore collection features interviews with people who have lived, studied, worked and played in North Sydney from the early 20th Century to the present day. This collection has been uploaded to Amplify, an audio transcription platform. Using speech-to-text software, Amplify creates machine-generated transcripts of oral history interviews which are edited by volunteers. You can help enrich these historical records by correcting transcription errors as you listen to them. Visit Amplify to contribute to this work and help make our collection more accessible.
