Report a faulty street light
You can inform Ausgrid of any problems with street lights by:
- Calling the 24-hour Ausgrid contact centre on 1800 044 808 OR
- visiting the Ausgrid website.
Where possible, please quote the electric light pole number, which can be found on a silver metal disc at eye level on the pole. This will assist with a faster response time.
Maintenance of lights
Street lighting in the North Sydney Council local government area is installed and maintained by Ausgrid (formerly EnergyAustralia). However, Council pays the electricity and maintenance bills. Generally, requests for the installation or upgrade of street lighting are initiated by Council.
Ausgrid endeavours to repair street lighting faults as quickly as possible. Please note that some underground street lighting faults can take longer to repair. Ausgrid has introduced energy efficient street lighting as a standard default light and has also improved its maintenance regime to include:
- the systematic replacement of lamps in every streetlight on a regular basis as a pre-emptive measure
- the regular replacement of intelligent sensors that turn the lights on and off
- night time maintenance patrols on a regular basis
- the gradual transfer of power supply for streetlights to the more reliable low voltage network.
Upgrading street lighting
To meet current Australian lighting standards, North Sydney Council, along with 29 other councils are upgrading existing mercury vapour lights and high-pressure sodium lights to LED lights throughout our LGA.
Councils foremost focus is community safety, so lighting upgrades are prioritised in areas with significant safety concerns.
LEDs while brighter due to their white light, are designed to distribute light more evenly and reduce glare and light spill, improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
The next phase of this program is implementing the upgrades along major roads.
